* Police in Sri Lanka arrest caterer who made over 450 garment workers sick

Jan 02, Colombo: Police in Sri Lanka Thursday arrested a caterer for supplying food unsuitable for consumption and making over 450 garment workers ill.

Homagama police arrested the caterer who supplied the food after 487 workers attached to 3 garment factories managed by one company at Poruwa-danda in Horana, Homagama and Padukka were hospitalized due to food poisoning this morning, local radio station Hiru FM reported.

Western Provincial Health Services Director and Health Ministry Additional Secretary Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva told the radio station that the catering establishment alleged of supplying contaminated food has already been sealed.

Legal actions will be taken against its owner under the Food Protection Act in due course, the official said.

Majority of victims were female workers and 287 of them are still receiving treatment at Horana, Homagama and Padukka hospitals, according to the report.

The Health Ministry has meanwhile, appointed a special team from its Contagious Diseases Unit to investigate the incident.
