Thu, Jan 2, 2014, 01:34 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 01, Colombo: Southern Provincial Council member of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Krishantha Pushpakumara has decided to join the ruling party and support the government.

Addressing a media briefing held in Galle Pushpakumara alias 'Raththaran' said he decided to resign from the UNP as he had to face many injustices from the party.

The Councilor said he is willing to continue a long term political journey with the ruling party and contest the forthcoming Southern Provincial Council election as a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) candidate.

He said he already had discussions with the President Mahinda Rajapaksa about his decision.

Contesting 2009 Southern Provincial Council polls from the Galle district Pushpakumara obtained 371,000 preferential votes, largest number of preferential votes for a UNP candidate.
