* Sri Lanka Police arrest police officer and wife for allegedly peddling drugs

Jan 01, Colombo: The police in Sri Lanka have arrested a police officer and his wife for allegedly peddling heroin.

The police announced that Wellampitiya Police OIC M. D. Munasinghe and his wife have been arrested by police yesterday (December 31) for allegedly peddling heroin.

The police have reportedly found 26.5 grams of heroin in the OIC's official quarters when it was checked.

The Police Organized Crime Investigation Division has arrested the OIC and his wife and detained them until January 6.

The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) will further question the OIC and his wife on their involvement in drug trafficking.

A report filed by the CCD before Colombo Additional Magistrate A.M. Shahabdeen has reportedly stated that the Wellampitiya Police OIC was arrested on December 31 around 7:00 pm for the alleged involvement in heroin trafficking following confessions made by three suspects arrested for possession of heroin.

The report noted that at the time of arrest, the suspects had in their possession 25 grams of heroin worth over Rs. 150,000 in the market.

The report has added that on checking the quarters of the Wellampitiya OIC police had recovered another 26.5 grams of heroin.
