Dec 31, Colombo: A Sri Lankan Minister said Tuesday that another group of MPs of the major opposition United National Party (UNP) are discussing with the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party with the hope of crossing over to the government side.

Addressing a function held to donate life jackets to the fishermen, Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera said that some of these UNP MPs would contest as the Chief Minister candidates of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Minister Amaraweera also said that the crossovers would affect the experienced politicians of the UPFA.

The Western and Southern Provincial Councils are to be dissolved in January. The ruling alliance was extremely successful in fielding the crossover UNPer Dayasiri Jayasekara as the Chief Minister candidate of the Northwestern Provincial Council.
