Tue, Dec 31, 2013, 10:27 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has rejected rumors that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunga will contest the next presidential election as the common candidate of the joint opposition.

Head of the UNP Communications Division, parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera said the story published in Mawbima Sinhala newspaper was a total fabrication.

MP Samaraweera admitted that there was a party in his house on December 22 with the participation of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, Kumaranatunga and several others.

However, there was no secret discussion as reported by the newspaper, he added.

He said that the UNP had not taken any decision regarding the next presidential election.
