* Leadership Council of Sri Lanka's main opposition party to discuss future directions tomorrow
Tue, Dec 31, 2013, 10:00 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 31, Colombo: The Leadership Council of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) will meet tomorrow (January 01) to discuss the future actions of the party and elections that are to be held from 2014.

UNP parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya will chair the Council meeting that will be held at the party headquarters.

UNP sources say that the Leadership Council will discuss about the candidates for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections and holding interviews to select the candidates.

The Council will also discuss the proposal by the party's National Leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe to appoint UNP parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva as the UNP's chief ministerial candidate for the Western Provincial Council election next March.

A senior UNP member said that the Leadership Council is to make a decision on the vacancies in the Council due to the non-participation of UNP MPs Sajith Premadasa and Thalatha Atukorale.

An earlier media report said the Leadership Council is considering creating a vice chairman post and offering the post to Premadasa to get him to join the Council.

The Leadership Council is expected to see the advice of the United Bhikku Front (UBF) on filling the vacancies in the Council.
