* Consumer Affairs Authority of Sri Lanka to take legal action against milk powder hoarders
Tue, Dec 31, 2013, 08:45 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 31, Colombo: The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka will take legal action from tomorrow (January 01) against any importer, manufacturer, or distributor of milk powder who hoards the essential item without approval from the Authority.

The CAA said that importers, manufacturers and distributors of milk powder will not be able to store, stock or keep milk powder either in packs or in bulk in any warehouse that is not registered under the Authority.

The CAA has been vested with the relevant powers under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, No. 09 of 2003 and the law will come into effect tonight through the Gazette notification bearing No. 1842/21.

Several milk powder importers have requested for a price increase earlier in the month and the CAA has not yet made a final decision on the matter.

According to CAA's Assistant Director, Pricing and Management Division, Rohan Meewanage a decision has not been made on whether to grant the requested price increase.
