* Industrial estate in former Sri Lanka war zone to be opened in January 2014

Dec 29, Colombo: The first stage of the Atchchuvely Industrial Estate, the first industrial zone in former war zone in Sri Lanka's Northern Province will be completed before end of January 2014, the Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda said.

The first Green Industrial Zone in the country extending over an area of 64 acres will be developed in two stages and 24 acres will be fully developed under the first stage before the end of next month.

Minister Devananda recently inspected the progress of the Industrial Estate and instructed the relevant officials to complete all the work deemed necessary to start the first stage of the project in order to enable the industrialists to commence their ventures before the end of January 2014, the Government Information Department said.

The Rs. 200 million projects is mostly funded by the Indian government and the Ministry utilized an Indian grant of Rs 175 million in infrastructure development in the industrial zone while the Sri Lankan government provided Rs. 25 million.

The Industrial Estate, which belongs to the Ceylon Industrial Development Board (IDB), was completely destroyed during the armed conflict.

All the infrastructure facilities including, internal roads, drinking water, sanitary facilities and electricity have now been put in place and the entry road to the Estate from A-9 highway is now being reconstructed.

The Industrial Estate has already attracted over 50 investors, mostly in the food and beverage sector. The development of the Atchchuvely Industrial Estate in Jaffna is expected to provide employment to a large number of people in the war-torn region.
