* Three people die trying to escape a train engine fire in Sri Lanka

Dec 27, Colombo: Three people in Sri Lanka have died when they tried to escape a fire that erupted in the engine of the train they were travelling, the police said.

A fire erupted in the engine of a train plying from Matara to Kandy Friday evening near the Wadurawa Railway Station, about 39 km northeast of capital Colombo.

The three passengers of the train died when they jumped out of the train to escape the fire and got hit by a train plying in the opposite direction, the police said.

According to local media reports one person was killed when hit by the oncoming train and two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

The fire in the train engine has been completely doused now, the police said. No other injuries were reported.
