Dec 26, Colombo: Veteran Sri Lankan educator Bogoda Premarathne passed away today. He was at 92 years old at the time of his death.
Bogoda Premarathne was the first Buddhist principal of Sri Lanka's prestigious Royal College in Colombo.
He joined the education service as an assistant teacher and became the Deputy Principal of the Royal College from 1959 to 1965. He became the principal of Royal College from 1965 to 1971.
Premarathne also served as the Commissioner of Examinations from 1971 to 1976 and as the principal of the Meerigama Teacher Training School.
He has authored a wide array of Buddhist textbooks including 'Daham Esa'. He was also the Chairman of International Buddhist Centre in Kanduboda.
The government of Sri Lanka has bestowed the national civil honor 'Deshabandu' on Premarathne in 1989 for his service to the island's education.
His remains lie at number 31, Jayasinghe Mawatha, Colombo 06. Final rites will take place at 4:00 pm on Saturday at Kirulapona General Cemetery.
