* Leadership Council of Sri Lanka's main opposition party to make final decision on chief ministerial candidates
Thu, Dec 26, 2013, 02:12 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 26, Colombo: The Leadership Council of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) will make the final decision on the party's chief ministerial candidates for the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections expected to be held next year.

UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has said that the final decision on the persons who will lead the party and be its chief ministerial candidates at the provincial council elections will be made by the Leadership Council headed by parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya.

Wickremasinghe has already proposed the name of parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva to lead the party in the Western Province. However, the Leadership Council will decide on the matter.

Meanwhile, the party has also issued directives to all members of the party to refrain from making any comments about the UNP chief ministerial candidates at the provincial council elections to the media until the Leadership Council announces its final decision on the matter since it would create unwanted issues.
