* Army personnel to maintain main public park in Sri Lankan capital

Dec 24, Colombo: Colombo Municipal Council says that the government will deploy 100 Army personnel for the maintenance of Colombo's main public space Viharamahadevi Park.

The oldest and the biggest public park in the country is being renovated these days under a plan of the Urban Development Authority which comes under the purview of Defense and Urban Development Ministry.

Fifty Army personnel have already been deployed for the maintenance of the park.

The rest of the personnel are to be deployed soon. They are to be paid Rs. 700 per day allowance for the duties in the park.

Viharamahadevi Park, formerly known as Victoria Park, consists of 45 acres of land with vegetation, ponds, lawns and walkways.
