Dec 24, Colombo: Ally of Sri Lanka's ruling alliance, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has decided to contest separately at the provincial council elections to be held next year.
The party said it will contest separately in the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections expected to be held in March next year.
The SLMC's decision making bodies have held several discussions on deciding how the party would contest at the provincial council elections and selecting the candidates to contest from the party.
SLMC General Secretary, parliamentarian M.T. Hassan Ali said the party's High Command will meet in the first week of January to make a final decision.
Ali said the party must contest separately under the SLMC's tree symbol like in the last few elections.
Government sources have said that the Western and Southern Provincial Councils will be dissolved next month and elections will be held in March.
