Dec 24, Colombo: A ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) member of Sri Lanka's Southern Provincial Council submitted his resignation today.

Council Member D.W. Prathapasinghe , a former Deputy Inspector General of Police submitted his resignation to the Chairman of the Southern Provincial Council.

However, the councilor told media that his resignation is not due to a dispute with the ruling alliance but to accept a different duty vested in him by the President. He is reportedly to be appointed to a senior position in a government media institution.

Prathapsinghe was appointed to the Southern Provincial Council in 2010 to fill the vacancy of Hemal Gunasekara who contested the general election.
