Sun, Dec 22, 2013, 09:47 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 22, Colombo: Sri Lankan President's Media Unit has dismissed a video cameraman of the unit as punishment for shoplifting a camera from a duty free shop at the Dubai airport, local media reported.

The sacked cameraman of President Mahinda Rajapaksa's media unit was part of the President's entourage on his recent trip to Africa where the President participated in the funeral services of Nelson Mandela in South Africa and 50th Independence Day celebrations in Kenya.

The cameraman was reportedly caught when he was trying to steal a camera worth Rs. 400,000 at Dubai Airport. The shop employees have observed the theft and it was also recorded in the shop's security camera.

However, the shop employees have released the cameraman with a warning when the cameraman introduced himself as an official of Sri Lanka President's media unit.

He was soon sacked following his return to country, an official of the President's Media Unit said.
