* Opposition party to provide legal assistance to Sri Lanka's ruling party councilors voted against local government budgets
Sun, Dec 22, 2013, 09:12 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has decided to provide legal assistance to ruling party members of local government councils who voted against the budgets of the respective councils that are administered by the ruling party.

The ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) last week decided to expel the local government councilors of the UPFA that voted against the 2014 budget proposals of the councils.

A spokesman of a lawyers' union affiliated with the opposition party told the local media that the union has decided to challenge the ruling party decision and provide pro bono legal assistance to the councilors.

Ruling party's decision to take action came following the defeat of budget proposals of 16 local government bodies including Pradeshiya Sabhas, Urban Councils and Municipal Councils with a majority of ruling party members.
