Dec 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka police said four more skulls were unearthed at an unmarked grave site found in Mannar in Northern Sri Lanka.
The excavations continued today after the grave site was discovered yesterday along the access road to the Thirukethiswaram Kovil in Mannar in the former war zone.
Construction workers laying water pipes along the road stumbled on the human skeletal remains yesterday and alerted the police and 6 skulls were discovered among the remains.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that the Mannar Police are conducting the investigation and a magisterial inquiry has already begun. More police officers have been deployed to the region to provide additional security, the spokesman added.
"A judicial medical officer has gone to the site. Further forensic examinations are underway to determine the age of the mass grave," Police spokesman told AFP.
The remains are yet to be identified and how and when the deaths occurred are yet to be determined, according to the police.
