* Sri Lankan Navy personnel accused of assaulting Indian fishermen
Sun, Dec 22, 2013, 08:28 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 22, Rameshwaram: Sri Lanka navy personnel are again accused of attacking a group of Indian fishermen from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and injuring four of them.

Sri Lankan Navy men allegedly assaulted four fishermen Sunday and pelted stones at a boat with the Indian fishermen injuring 20 of them, Indian media report said.

The Navy men also severed the anchor of the boat and destroyed fishing nets, the fishery official has said.

According to the official the Navy personnel assaulted the four fishermen for not helping one of their colleagues, who fell in the fisherman's boat while trying to jump in the vessel and suffered a fracture.

Sri Lankan Navy denies attacking Indian fishermen but says it conducts routine patrols and apprehends poachers detected fishing illegally in Sri Lankan Waters in order to protect the country's fisheries resources.
