Dec 22, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has received a Rs 15.5 billion (Japanese Yen 12.381 billion) loan from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to construct major bridges on the nation's roads.

The loan will be utilized to construct 37 major bridges on the country's roads under the Major Bridges Construction Project of the National Road Network.

The objective of the Project is to construct the major bridges, whose overall length is more than 30 meters, in order to improve the national road network, thereby contributing to economic development.

The project will construct bridges on the roads in the Northern, Western, Southern, North Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

The Cabinet last week granted approval to a proposal made by the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Highways, Ports and Shipping, to award the contract for providing consultancy services for the project as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (SCAPC).
