* Opposition leader compares Sri Lankan President to King Ajasath of ancient India
Sat, Dec 21, 2013, 09:29 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 21, Colombo: Leader of the Opposition and Sri Lanka's main opposition party, the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremasinghe says that people find it difficult to survive today than during the period of the war.

Addressing the UNP's 55th convention at the party headquarters Sirikotha today, Wickremasinghe said that only a very small percentage of the country enjoyed all luxuries while the rest of the people have been asked by the government to make do with what is available.

He observed that the government has pushed the country's economy into an abyss and is also entangled in a debt trap due to the massive foreign loans obtained for the administration's survival.

Comparing the Sri Lankan President to King Ajasath, who had created rifts among the Lichchavi kings in order to conquer the democratic Vaishali kingdom in ancient India, Wickremasinghe accused the President of creating problems within the UNP with the aim of weakening the party.

According to Wickremasinghe, the government is also engaged in such a plot as King Ajasath and is even using the media to weaken the UNP.

However, he observed that the UNP will build its strengths and fight to defeat the government.
