* Sri Lanka's main opposition party holds its 55th annual convention, adopts four proposals

Dec 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today held its 55th annual convention under the chairmanship of the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe at the party headquarters Sirikotha .

During the convention the party unanimously approved four proposals including the setting up of the Leadership Council.

The party approved the powers vested with the Leadership Council headed by UNP parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya and therefore approval has been granted for the vesting of powers, tasks and responsibilities to the Council according to Article 5:2 of the party convention.

The other proposals that were approved include the setting up of a new mechanism to bring the party into a victorious path, abolishing the executive presidency and urging the government to provide relief to the people by stopping corruption and wastage and establish a government which provides relief to the people.

At the convention UNP Parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya said the party will prepare plans at village level to successfully contest the upcoming provincial council elections.
