* India offers scholarships to Sri Lankan students for higher education

Dec 20, Colombo: The Government of India has offered 180 scholarships for Sri Lankan candidates to follow undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. degrees at some of the leading universities in India, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a release.

These scholarships are available for study in all the courses except medicine including Engineering, Science, Business, Economics, Commerce, Humanities and Arts.

All scholarships cover full tuition fees for the entire duration of the course, in addition to a monthly sustenance allowance, an accommodation allowance and an annual grant for books and stationary.

Besides, all ICCR scholars in India are provided full healthcare facilities, air fare to the nearest destination in India and an annual grant for educational tours to various parts of the country, apart from several other auxiliary benefits.

Indian government has offered 100 scholarships for Sri Lankan Nationals under the "Nehru Memorial Scholarship Scheme" for all undergraduate courses except medicine.

Another 50 scholarships are offered under the Maulana Azad Scholarship Scheme for Masters Degrees including Engineering, Science, Economics, Commerce, Humanities and Arts. However, preference would be given to the fields of Engineering, Science and Agriculture. Medicine including indigenous Medicine courses is not included in this scheme.

Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship Scheme for undergraduate studies offers 25 slots for undergraduate courses in the field of ‘Information Technology’ leading to a B.E or B.Tech Degree.

Five slots are offered under Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme for Masters and PhD Degrees in all subjects except Medicine.

Meritorious Sri Lankan nationals will be selected for award of these scholarships. Selection of candidates is done in consultation with the Sri Lanka Ministry of Higher Education to pursue higher studies including research in some of the topmost universities in India.

The Ministry has invited applications from eligible candidates and the Application forms can be downloaded from the website of Ministry of Higher Education at The last date for submission of duly filled up application forms for all the above four schemes is January 20, 2014.

Prospective students are advised to approach the Ministry of Higher Education to learn more about the selection procedures and eligibility criteria. Interested candidates can also direct their queries to High Commission of India or visit their website for further details on the scholarships.
