* Transport sector workers of Sri Lanka request Rs. 1,000 bonus from President
Fri, Dec 20, 2013, 11:14 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 20, Colombo: Workers in Sri Lanka's state transport sector have called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to grant them a Rs. 1,000 bonus at the end of the year.

The All Ceylon Transport Workers Union (ACTWU) has written a letter to President Rajapaksa requesting him to take the required steps to pay a bonus of Rs 1,000 each at the end of the year to all Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) workers.

ACTWU General Secretary, Sepala Liyanage has informed the President in writing that SLTB officials had prevented some employees from receiving a bonus in December.

"There needs to be quality within the SLTB and every employee should be paid a bonus," he has noted.

The President has also been asked to increase the advance payment given to SLTB employees to purchase stationery from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000.

Liyanage has noted that even Rs. 5,000 was insufficient as a stationery allowance to purchase the book lists due to the high prices.

He has added that each SLTB employee should be paid Rs. 6,000 at the end of the year as bonus and stationery allowance.
