Dec 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that the current government is administered by drug traffickers and casino and distillery businesses.
JVP politburo member, parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference that the quantity of heroin and ethanol confiscated by authorities has increased in the past few years.
He said the authorities have failed to initiate proper inquiries or take legal action against the culprits since they receive political protection.
"The immunity enjoyed by the persons involved in this kind of dealings show the level of corruption in the government," Dissanayake said.
He explained that previous governments had received assistance from drug traffickers and casino and distillery owners, but the current government is administered by these "unsavory" elements.
He added that a case filed by the Attorney General against heroin trafficking was later withdrawn by the Attorney General due to political pressure.
