Dec 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has asked the former deputy leader and senior MP Sajith Premadasa to take leadership at Southern PC polls which is expected to be held next year.
UNP MP Ravi Karunanayaka called on the senior party member, who is rebelling against the party leadership and the recently appointed Leadership Council to take the leadership at the Southern Provincial Council elections next year.
Karunanayaka told the media that he was prepared to contest from the UNP at the Western Provincial Council election next year and called on Premadasa to do the same in the Southern Provincial Council election.
The two provincial councils are to be dissolved on December 28th and elections are to be held around March next year.
Karunanayaka explained that the UNP is currently having discussions with political parties on the possibility of contesting the upcoming provincial council elections as a common opposition.
He added that all opposition political parties need to unite to pose a formidable challenge to the governing party.
