Dec 18, Colombo: The Leadership Council of Sri Lanka's major opposition United National Party (UNP) says it will continue with its duties despite the refusal by a senior member to join the Council.
Member of the Leadership Council, parliamentarian Kabir Hashim told a news conference that the Council will continue with its work and won't wait for UNP MP Sajith Premadasa to join it.
Premadasa initially agreed to join the Leadership Council at a meeting between monks from the United Bhikku Front, the Chairman of the Council MP Karu Jayasuriya and himself, but later refused to joint it due to disagreements over the appointment of members to the Council.
However, Hashim said the Leadership Council has been tasked to strengthen the party and will continue with the assigned duties.
He added that Premadasa has also failed to provide a viable reason for his refusal to be part of the Leadership Council.
The Council has been vested with many powers of the party leader and is expected to introduce reforms to the party and decide on the party's stances to win future elections.
