* Sri Lanka Prime Minister's office pitted against ruling party ally over heroin controversy
Tue, Dec 17, 2013, 10:58 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 17, Colombo: Deepening the dispute between Sri Lanka Prime Minister's office and the coalition party of ruling alliance, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) over the heroin controversy, the PM's office today questioned the sincerity of JHU's request for the PM to step down.

At a press conference today, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne's office asked the JHU to resign from the cabinet portfolios instead of pressing the Prime Minister to resign over the heroin issue.

The press conference organized by the Prime Minister's office was addressed by the leaders of Inter Religious Organization.

Questioning the genuineness of the JHU's plea for the PM to resign Ven. Kahatapitiye Pannasara Thero of the Inter Religious Organization said the Jathika Hela Urumaya should resign from its cabinet portfolios instead of pressing the Prime Minister to resign.

Chairman of the organization Rev. Father Sarath Hettiarachchi said that the said letter related to the container of heroin demanding release of it from Colombo Port had been issued by the Prime Minister's office without the knowledge of the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne did not participate in the press conference as mentioned in the calling letter. The journalists were not permitted to ask questions.
