* Sri Lanka police arrest over 50,000 on drug charges in 2013
Tue, Dec 17, 2013, 11:42 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka police have arrested over 51,000 people this year on drug related offenses across the country.

Police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana and police have also seized over 300 kilograms of drugs during island wide raids conducted by the police, Police Narcotics Bureau and Special Task Force.

The spokesman said the investigations have revealed that the drug peddlers had used Sri Lanka as a center for drug trafficking and storing.

He further explained that before the end of the war when the terrorists were in control of the North and East the drug peddlers used those areas to store the drug stocks but with the end of the terrorism the Army has taken control of the region and dealt a severe blow to their businesses.

The police spokesman further said that measures have been taken under the guidance of Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to launch a program next year aiming to eradicate drug menace from the country.
