* Three teams to investigate accident with police vehicle that killed three in Sri Lanka

Dec 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police have deployed three teams to investigate the accident of a police vehicle carrying a high ranking police official with a three-wheeler that killed three youths.

The accident occurred in the late night hours of Saturday on the Chilaw- Puttalam main road in Madurankuliya in Northwestern Sri Lanka.

The Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohan at a media briefing today said the police vehicle carrying the Superintendent of Police of the Puttalam Division was plying from Mundalama to Puttalam when it collided with the three-wheeler with the three youth plying in the opposite direction.

The police official had said that the three-wheeler, plying at an excessive speed, lost control and toppled over and his vehicle was unable to avoid colliding with the toppled vehicle.

The injured youth, were taken to the Puttalam General Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

The Spokesperson said while the investigation is being continued, according to the outcome of the police investigations and the outcome of the post mortem examination conducted by the Judicial Medical Officer of Puttalam Hospital it has been revealed that the driver has consumed liquor.

The driver of the official police vehicle was arrested and later released on a surety bail of Rs.200,000.

The victims, Ayantha Madushanka, 20, Milan Prasanna, 20, Pramodya Shrimal Madushanka, 17, were relatives of the same family living in the Mirichcha-Kattuwa area in Munadalama, NewsFirst reported.

The three youths had been returning home after closing their restaurant in Madurankuliya at the end of the day. One of the three youths, Ayantha Madushanka, was reportedly at the wheel of the ill-fated vehicle.

The relatives of the victims have expressed suspicions over the accident.

The Acting Magistrate of Puttalam Mohammed Cader conducted the magisterial inquiry into the incident. The police have deployed three teams to continue investigations into the accident.
