* Maldivian President invited to visit Sri Lanka

Dec 15, Malé: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has extended an invitation to the new President of Maldives Yameen Abdul Gayoom to visit Sri Lanka, the Maldivian government news agency reported.

Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in the Maldives, Dickson Sarathchandra Dela has personally delivered the President's invitation to Yameen when he called on the new President.

President Yameen, accepting the invitation, has said that warm and friendly relations have long characterized the bilateral relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka and expressed confidence that his visit would further expand the close ties between the two countries.

Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Maldives date back as far as the 1960s. Since then, the two countries have maintained close ties.

The President and the High Commissioner have further exchanged views on widening the scope of cooperation between the two countries, especially in the areas of health, education and security.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner has assured the Maldivian President that Sri Lanka would always be a close friend of the Maldives and expressed keenness to work closely with the Government of Maldives.

The High Commissioner has also praised the smooth and peaceful presidential elections in the Maldives that were held recently.
