Sat, Dec 14, 2013, 10:10 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 14, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Police Department has arrested over 145,000 persons who have allegedly been involved in narcotic dealings within the last two years.

Police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana told a news conference that the Police Narcotics Bureau have arrested 148,966 persons in various raids and investigations conducted from January 1, 2011 to December 2013.

He said that around 385 kilos of heroin, 176.718 kilos of weed and 30 kilos of other drugs have been seized during raids conducted during the two-year period.

The Police Spokesperson also requested the public to inform of any narcotic related matter to the Police Narcotics Bureau.

The police have been cracking down on narcotic dealings in the country and interest has increased following the current controversy over the largest haul of heroin that was confiscated by the Customs Department in August this year.
