A Naval patrol craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command arrested the 110 Indian fishermen and seized 15 trawlers allegedly engaged in illegal fishing in the eastern seas of Sri Lanka.

The arrested fishermen were taken into Navy's in Sri Lankan waters off Foul Point and brought to Trincomalee Fisheries Harbor. They will be handed over to Harbor Police for legal action, the Navy said.

Indian media reports said that the Navy arrested over 300 Indian fishermen and later released most of them while detaining 110 fishermen.

According to a PTI report Sri Lankan Navy arrested 227 fishermen from Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu and has taken them to Jaffna but they were released after the Indian government held talks with the Lankan government.

An Indian fishery official has said the fishermen could have been arrested for not having a proper fishing token issued by the department and for crossing the International Maritime Boundary line.
