Dec 10, Colombo: The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) today held several events to celebrate the International Human Rights Day across the country.
The HRCSL organized a national event and 10 regional events to mark the day. The special events were held on 10th December in Colombo, Jaffna, Ampara, Matara, Badulla, Vavuniya, Kalmunai, on 4th December in Anuradhapura, on 9th December in Trincomalee.
Special events will be held on 11th in Batticaloa and on 12th December in Kandy.
Human Rights stakeholders including non-governmental organizations, law enforcement officials, public officers and students including law students participated in these programs.
The HRCSL also held debates among school children on a given Human Rights theme and cultural events.
"As we celebrate International Human Rights Day we reaffirm our commitment to protect and promote Human Rights. It is an obligation of every government to guarantee rights of all citizens," HRCSL said in a statement.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 10 December as the Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring to the attention of the peoples of the world the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the first global enunciation of Human Rights.
The theme for this year's Human Rights Day is "Working for your Rights". The 20th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and plan of action is also celebrated this year.
