* Sri Lanka Railway Department facing a breakdown due to politicians - Union
Tue, Dec 10, 2013, 08:43 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 10, Colombo: Trade unions affiliated to Sri Lanka Railways say that the institution is facing a severe breakdown due to politicians and their henchmen.

General Secretary of the All Ceylon Railway General Employees' Union Sumathipala Manawadu said the appointment of politicians and their supporters without proper knowledge on the subject to key positions in the Railway Department has resulted in the institution being pushed into a sorry state.

He observed that the administration, financial discipline and operations of the Railway Department are facing severe breakdowns.

Referring to the incident where a 'Y' type engine travelled from Maradana to Ratmalana without a driver, Manawadu said the entire Railway Department was being driven without a proper drive given the current state of affairs.

"There is no room for the Department of Railways to carry out administration affairs in an efficient manner. Recruitments for the Department are carried out by the Minister according to his wishes. Discipline and administration has broken down. Those who have been involved in serious corruption and indiscipline have been given various favors including posts of monitoring officer," the trade union leader alleged.

Manawadu said the railway employees call on all railway commuters and the masses who pay taxes to maintain the Railway Department to rally against the current situation and fulfill their responsibilities.
