Tue, Dec 10, 2013, 10:08 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 10, Colombo: A Sri Lankan man has attempted to commit suicide at the office of Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) demanding the officials to bring back his wife who has gone to Saudi Arabia as a housemaid.

The 40- year-old father of four children said that his wife went to Saudi Arabia via a recruitment agency in Anuradhapura seven months ago. He said that the wife was being harassed by the residents of her employer's house and demanded the officials to bring her back to the island.

He further said that the recruitment agency, which sent the domestic worker overseas, had demanded Rs. 350,000, a sum the family could not afford, to bring her back.

Women of poverty stricken families of Sri Lanka resort to housemaid jobs in Middle East countries for a small salary.

The 32 year old woman had left four children of the ages of 17, 09, 07 and 04. The man who attempted committing suicide after kissing the four kids was immediately hospitalized and then transferred to Colombo General Hospital. The kids were handed over to the relatives.

Sri Lanka government discourages the migration of unskilled women for foreign employment but still the remittance of the housemaids is a major pillar of the economy of the island nation.
