* Colombo city fire shows inadequacy in firefighting capability of Sri Lanka Fire Brigade

Dec 09, Colombo: R.P. Wijesuriya, the Officer-in-Charge of Colombo Fire Brigade said that the unavailability of a proper system of fire extinguishing water points limit the capacity of the Fire Brigade.

The official said that the fire broke out recently in Colombo spread fast and was difficult to control due to this reason.

Highlighting the need of proper water supply system for firefighting, the official said the recent development has dislocated the water outlets fixed in the city for the purpose of firefighting.

Over 100 shops that belonged to the Urban Development Authority were burnt in the Friday night fire which spread rapidly in the city center.

Officer-in-Charge of Colombo Fire Brigade said that the bowsers that carried water to the fire had to move away for refilling and the traffic further delayed them.
