* Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition party to transfer powers to the Leadership Council

Dec 08, Colombo: Powers of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) leader sources are to be vested in the newly appointed Leadership Council, party sources say.

The UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has consented to transfer most of the crucial powers to the leadership council, according to sources.

UNP general assembly is scheduled to be held on December 21 in Colombo. The party has planned to amend the party constitution at the general assembly so that the Leadership Council can be legalized.

UNP Leadership Council is headed by MP Karu Jayasuriya. However UNP rebel leader Sajith Premadasa who vies for the party leadership did not accept the membership in the Council.
