* Sri Lanka police rule out sabotage in Colombo fire
Sat, Dec 7, 2013, 11:32 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka police Saturday have launched a special investigation into the fire that broke out in rows of shops at Bodhiraja Mawatha in Pettah yesterday.

After preliminary investigations by the Government Analyst and the Divisional Electrical Engineer, the police have determined that the fire which gutted over 50 shops of the shopping strip in downtown Colombo was not a result of sabotage.

The Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana speaking to media at a briefing today said the fire started in the 77th shop and spread fast.

However, the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

SSP Rohana said the investigation on the fire has been handed over to Colombo Crime Division and the cause for the incident is expected to be found soon.

Meanwhile, the Defense and Urban Development Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has asked the Colombo Mayor A.J. M. Muzammil to provide immediate relief to the vendors who lost their businesses due to the fire, local radio Hiru FM reported.
