Dec 07, Chennai: The Indian Coast Guard has arrested 16 Sri Lankan fishermen on Thursday for allegedly fishing illegally in Indian waters, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The latest arrest of 16 fishermen brings the total of Sri Lankan fishermen arrested within the last eleven days to 92, according to the media reports.
In a statement Saturday the coastal security agency said it apprehended the Sri Lankan fishermen on December 05 in a coordinated sea-air operation and seized their three fishing boats.
The Coast Guard apprehended two Lankan boats 118 nautical miles east off Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The third boat was apprehended 116 nautical miles east of Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh in Indian waters, the statement said.
The boats, along with the crew, are being escorted to Chennai for handing over to local police, the Coast Guard said.
Families of arrested Sri Lankan fishermen complain that Sri Lanka is not taking effective measures to get their breadwinners released from Indian custody. They allege that Indian fishermen are released swiftly as compared to Sri Lankans due to the pressure from Indian authorities while Sri Lankan authorities are apathetic in getting their family members released.
