* Sri Lanka consumer authority seizes hidden milk powder stocks worth Rs. 80 million
Thu, Dec 5, 2013, 10:37 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 05, Colombo: The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized a huge stock of milk powder hidden in a warehouse in Seeduwa.

The Authority found 257,658 of 450-gram milk powder packets worth Rs. 80 million in the private warehouse during a raid today.

Just a day before the CAA found 13.5 tonnes of milk powder stocks hidden at a prominent milk powder factory in Welisara.

Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando has said that the errant traders have hidden away the stocks in warehouse instead of releasing to the market to create an artificial shortage of milk powder in the market.

He has instructed the Consumer Authority to nab such errant traders and requested the public and the media to extend their utmost support to expose such racketeers, the state run radio said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the CAA Rumi Marshook said no approval was given to raise milk powder prices at this time and there are ample stocks of milk powder in the country. He requested the public to inform the Authority if they experience any irregularities in the price or supply regarding milk powder.
