* Sri Lanka's major Muslim party to contest the Provincial Councils independently
Wed, Dec 4, 2013, 08:44 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major Muslim party, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) announced that the party would contest the upcoming Provincial Council elections as an independent party.

Accordingly, the SLMC which is a coalition party of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) would contest the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections independently without allying with other parties, a SLMC spokesman said.

The spokesman said that the party believed it could guarantee the representation for the Muslims through contesting independently.

SLMC succeeded in this strategy in the elections held in the recent past.

Western and Southern Provincial Councils are expected to be dissolved this month and the election is likely to be held in March 2014.
