Nov 04, Delft: The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Sri Lanka police has arrested five suspects including the Opposition leader of the Northern Provincial Council for the murder of the Chairman of Delft Pradeshiya Sabha.
Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana told media that opposition leader of the Northern Provincial Council K. Kamalendran of the EPDP and the wife of the victim were among the arrested suspects.
Daniel Rexiyan (Rajeev), Delft Divisional Council Chairman and a senior member of the ruling coalition party Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) led by Minister Douglas Devananda, was found injured with gunshot wounds to the head on November 28 at his residence.
Rexiyan, 44, succumbed to his injuries on admission to the Punkuduthivu hospital.
The CID took over investigations into the death of chairman after an autopsy revealed that he was shot in the head. Earlier the EPDP party has claimed the death was a suicide
Police spokesman told media that they believe the murder was due to a personal family dispute.
