Aug 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka ruling party parliamentarian Duminda Silva, who is a suspect of the murder of Presidential Advisor Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra in 2011, has been accused of ordering the shooting.
A witness in Premachandra's murder case has told court that he had heard MP Duminda Silva ordering his security to shoot Premachandra in a confrontation at Kolonnawa during the 2011 local government elections.
A statement, recorded by the police from witness U.K. Hashan Amaradeva and read at the Colombo Magistrate's Court stated that he had heard Silva ordering his supporters to shoot.
"Duminda Silva approached the place with a pistol in his hands. He slapped Bharatha. When Bharatha attempted to attack in return, Duminda Silva yelled at his people to shoot. There were at least 100 people with Duminda Silva at that time. They were armed with T-56s and pistols. Then Bharatha was shot in his leg and fell down. We rushed him to IDH."Amaradeva has said in his statement.
Premachandra's murder case was taken up for hearing before Additional Magistrate, Priyantha Liyanage. The case will be taken up again on September 3.
