Aug 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka Customs with the assistance of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau of Sri Lanka Police have discovered a massive stock of heroin in a container arrived from Pakistan.
The officials have seized 260 kilo grams of heroin packed in grease tins in the container and according to officials the haul is worth about 1.52 billion rupees.
The discovery was made when a container, declared to be containing lubricants, was inspected at the Custom Clearing Section at Orugodawatta. Officials said they were look out for the suspicious container for two months.
Superintendent of Customs Parakrama Basnayaka told the National Radio that this is the largest consignment of heroin ever to have been apprehended in Sri Lanka or in South Asia.
The police have arrested a Pakistani national and three Sri Lankans for questioning.
The Customs says that further investigations are being conducted on the stock of heroin.
Sri Lanka's National Dangerous Drugs Control Board says the country is a transit point for drugs coming mostly from Pakistan, Afghanistan and India and heading to European countries.
