* Sri Lankan trade union complains of deployment of Samurdhi officials for campaigning in North

Aug 30, Colombo: A trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka's Samurdhi Department has complained that officials attached to the Samurdhi Bank have been deployed to the Northern Province to carry out election work.

Secretary of the Samurdhi Development Officers' Association, Chamara Maddumakaluge said that six groups of Samurdhi Bank officials have been urgently deployed to five districts in the North to carry out campaign work for the forthcoming provincial council elections.

He explained that the groups have been assigned to Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya with Rs. 180,000 reportedly to monitor the Samurdhi Bank functions in the respective areas.

The monies according to Maddumakaluge are usually released by the financial division of the Bank and in this instance monies have been released from a different division.

He added that monitoring work with Samurdhi monies should be carried out by officials from the Samurdhi Bank who are answerable to the auditors and by provincial officials who are politically affiliated.
