Fri, Aug 30, 2013, 10:18 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 30, Colombo: An election official in Sri Lanka has blamed the police for election related clashes in the Northern Province.

Jaffna Assistant Commissioner of Elections, S. Achchudhan has said the police are entirely to be blamed for the election related clashes in the North.

Reportedly an individual had allegedly used a firearm during a clash in the Chavakachcheri area resulting in the hospitalization of two people. The suspect has been arrested by the police.

Achchudhan has said the Commissioner of Elections has instructed the police to remove all weapons including licensed weapons from civilians during the election period.

He has noted that incidents where people use fire arms in clashes would not have taken place if the police had taken the necessary precautions.
