Aug 29, Colombo: The Social Services Ministry of Sri Lanka plans to introduce legislation to enable blind persons to cast their votes at elections.
Social Services Minister Felix Perera said a special act has been introduced where blind persons can cast their votes at an election with an assistant of their choice.
The Elections Department has been informed of the new legislation which is to take effect from the provincial council elections in September, the Minister said.
Earlier a blind person had to seek the assistance of an official of the Elections Department at the polling center to cast the vote.
However, the new legislation would enable the blind person to take a relative or friend and get assistance to mark the ballot.
