Aug 29, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the Ministry of Highways to construct a new bridge across the Kokilai lagoon in the Eastern Province.
The proposed bridge to be built with the objective of expanding transport services between North and the East will connect the Trincomalee district and the Mullaitivu district along the Eastern shoreline.
The Ministry of Ports and Highways was given the task to implement the project. The preliminary plan of the new bridge has already been prepared, and the feasibility study is now being carried out, the government media unit said.
Although the length of the Kokilai lagoon is only around 3 kilometers, since there is no bridge to cross the lagoon, travel on alternative routes around the lagoon amounts to nearly 100 kilometers, the government says.
