Aug 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy personnel today brought ashore a mysterious container that has been submerged in deep sea off Chilaw in the northwestern coast.
The fishermen in the Chilaw -Kurupane fishing village had spotted the submerged container and notified the Navy.
The Navy today towed the approximately 40-foot long container utilizing a Dvora craft, local media reported.
A spokesperson of the Chilaw police has told the Hiru FM that the container lying on the beach now near the Navy camp will be opened Thursday in the presence of the Assistant Divisional Secretary of Chilaw.
Navy Media Spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya has said that until the container is opened the contents of the container will not be known.
However, the fishermen have told media that they found severalitems such as watches and sports equipment along the coast from Kurupane to Muthupanthiya in Chilaw.
The authorities believe the container likely had toppled off a ship.
