Aug 26, Colombo: As part of gradually returning the houses and lands occupied by them during the armed conflict, the Sri Lankan Army has released some more houses and lands in Jaffna to the legitimate owners.
Some more houses and lands in Vadamaratchi East, Pachchilapallai and Valikamam area that had been occupied by the Army were released on Friday (23) after shifting those camps to government lands.
Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe delivered the documents related to the release of 51 acres and 7 houses in Uduththurai, Mamunai, Champiyanpattu and Pullopallai to the Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Douglas Devananda who subsequently handed them over to Civil Administrative Authorities.
Camps were established in those areas by the Army in 2009 after defeating the LTTE terrorists in the military operation.
The Army also released 39 houses and lands belonging to 41 families in Santhilippay, Chankanai, Uduvil and Thelippalai. Camps were put up in those areas on security grounds after expulsion of terrorists in 1995 Operation Riviresa.
